Dine N Dash

Call me old fashioned but one of the video games that I love is Diner Dash. I got giddy when I was invited for a foodie meet-up at Dine n Dash’s new home at SM Taytay. Their interior looks very Diner Dash although they should really work with their ventilation so customers won’t smell like the pantry after dining in. I couldn’t comment that much about their customer service because I didn’t walk in as a paying customer. I love that they have enough parking space for their customers and that their location isn’t that hard to find.

I was 30 minutes late for the foodie meet-up because of the traffic situation along Ortigas avenue extension at 12nn. Well, don’t fret – this is not the usual scenario in the area. There’s just an ongoing road construction. For some people who are coming from Makati, it’s safe to use the C6 road until the construction is finished.

Among the appetizers that were served, I was able to taste their “Nacho Drive”. I am a fan of chili con carne and nachos so, it’s definitely a new favorite.

Burgers

Dine n Dash have 7 burgers to choose from and each can be served with fries and drinks for an additional P40. My top choices? Fantastic 4 cheese and Texas buffalo. These are not your usual burgers because you can really taste real meat for affordable prices.

Pasta

If you are like me who can eat pasta everyday, then Dine n Dash pasta dishes is a must-try. Their pasta can either be served “solo” or “to share”. My favorites are Seafood Bleu Cheese and Chicken Aglio Olio. They have a hefty serving. Their “to share” serving can feed up to 4 pax (well, that depends on your appetite). Why I love their pasta? The noodles are perfectly cooked and their signature sauces will make you come back for more. Did I mention that their food is affordable? Their dishes are also Instagramable!

Wings!

Choose from classic, hot and spicy, garlic parmesan and barbecue. Of course I always go for spicy wings! Pair it with Chipotle Mayo, Aioli, Blue Cheese or Honey Mustard then you’re good to go.

Entrees

The big fish. Trust me on this, it is really big and it’s only P119! This dish can be served with rice or fries.

Desserts

Thank heavens for oreos and ice cream! You just can’t go wrong with Midnight. I love the texture, the plating and the awesome taste of this dessert. The looks is not too complicated for a dessert but it’s the bomb!

I will definitely come back with Miguel to try out some of their dishes on the menu.

Zomato goes full-stack food-tech; introduces Whitelabel platform for restaurants

Earlier today, Zomato announced the launch of its Whitelabel Platform (zomato.com/whitelabel), a full suite of technologies for restaurants to run their business on the internet. The key feature on the platform is the ability for restaurants to launch custom-branded native mobile apps to help them connect with and engage their customers, and operate at internet scale.

The food-tech segment has seen a lot of action over the last year. As per a Tracxn report published in December 2014, the food-tech segment has seen a total investment of USD 1.2 Billion in 2014 alone. While the dine-out and online ordering segments have seen a large chunk of this funding, internet-first restaurants have also seen their fair share of interest from investors.

Currently, most of the internet-first restaurants primarily function on a ‘no/own kitchen + own delivery + on-demand’ model. The industry is seeing early signs of this concept germinating in certain urban clusters. However, a vast majority of the industry is dominated by the unorganised sector of asset-heavy restaurants, and there is a huge untapped opportunity to get them online, build innovative services, and drive more delight to customers. Zomato’s introduction of White Label Apps aims to capture this opportunity. Zomato White Label Apps is a plug-and-play platform which will power a restaurant’s digital identity with ease, enabling restaurants to spend more time focusing on their core business of food, translating directly to better dining experiences for users.

Ashish Goel, Chief of Product & Design, Zomato said “While speaking with a lot of restaurant owners, we realised that most of them do not have an app or digital presence and they want to harness the power and distribution of the internet and mobile to grow their business. And that there is no one single service provider for restaurants which can give them the entire suite of technologies required to run an internet presence closely integrated with the operations of their business. We see this as an opportunity to have a larger impact on the food-tech ecosystem, as well as create a larger overlap between tech and food.”

Pankaj Chaddah, Co-Founder, Zomato said “We are excited about the pace of innovation at Zomato. The bigger picture is increasingly becoming clearer to us and we are hoping that in a few months, we will be able to solve a large part of the pain points that users as well as business face in the industry.”

Zomato White Label apps offer features such as targeted push notifications, real-time information and menu management, and marketing tools to merchants at their fingertips. The app is based on a subscription model that bundles Zomato’s existing restaurant management app – Zomato For Business – into each subscription for free. These White Label apps integrate seamlessly into all the ancillary services Zomato offers, such as Online Ordering, Table Reservations, in-app Cashless payments, and the upcoming Zomato Base (point of sales system).

Zomato White Label Apps have already caught the attention of some top restaurant brands. Summerhouse Cafe in New Delhi, Miyabi Sushi in Dubai, and Shizuku Ramen in Melbourne are amongst the first 100 restaurants that have already signed up in the last week.

The Zomato White Label Platform will be available to restaurants in all 22 countries Zomato is present in currently.

Planet Grapes: Wine without the Drama

Planet Grapes opened it’s EDSA Shangri-la branch last February and since gained a number of patrons. Who wouldn’t love Planet Grapes?

They carry state-of-the-art Italian enomatic machines that allow customers to try different wines by sip, half-glass, and full glass sizes. Yes! It’s a wine vendo. You get to try their wine before you decide to buy a bottle.
Aside from that, they offer an adventurous menu containing foods that perfectly pair with wine. You’ll be surprised because the food that they offer are not commonly associated with wine. I love the ambiance and their interior. Black always has this classy appeal to me.

I was privileged to be invited by Zomato to try out Planet Grapes’ food and wine and to start off, we were served with Chicharon with Tinapa dip.

Yes, you read it right. It’s not mustard but tinapa dip. The tinapa dip gave a yummy twist to our usual chicharon that we are used to dip in vinegar. The dip is also a bit sour. The more dip, the better tasting your chicharon will be. Ever paired chicharon with wine? I did! A glass of Paul Mas Sauvignon Blanc 2012 came with this appetizer and I must say, it’s a match made in heaven.

I am really a fan of Bopis especially when it’s spicy. But I like it with rice tho. Pircas Negras Malbec 2013 was paired with this dish. Well, meat equals to red wine, I’m not really surprised but I really, really love their Bopis and I promise to come back for this.

The chicken BBQ that was served to us were a bit over cooked and some parts were no longer edible because uhm, they already look and tastes like charcoal.

Organic BBQ Pork Spare ribs. Looks good and tastes even better. I am intrigued on how they made this meat so succulent that it literally melts in your mouth. You can choose between mashed potato or adobo rice for this dish. I suggest that you go for adodo rice! Folie a Deux Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 both worked for chicken BBQ and BBQ spare ribs but I didn’t have the courage to finish a glass because the staff said, their going to serve another wine variant.

Dessert! My favorite part. We were served with a dessert platter and Urban Old Vines 2013 to cap the night off.

Turon trilogy is a local dessert made of thinly sliced bananas and ube then drizzled with Langka Caramel sauce. This definitely is a must-try.

Creme Brulee. These were steamed not baked and it comes with three different flavors: Banana. Classic, and Durian. Surprisingly, I find the Durian flavor the yummiest because it’s not too sweet.

Here’s a tip from Planet Grapes for wine virgins.
How to drink wine:
SEE. Observe the color of the wine.
SWIRL. expose wine to air; “breathe”
SMELL. identify the different aromas
SIP. taste the flavor of the wine
SPIT/SWALLOW

Eat Chops The Tomahawk Way

Zomato organized a Foodie Meet-up at Tomahawk, Kapitolyo last Wednesday. Because it was just a stone-throw away from my office, I attended the meet-up and walked away with a happy heart and tummy.

Tomahawk just opened last June 2014 and has been getting a lot of good feedback since then. When I entered the restaurant, I thought it was pretty small but I didn’t realized that it has a second level until one of the waiters led me to our table. Tomahawk has a nice interior and cool frames with quotations that will bring in some good vibes. It’s perfect for team buildings and small gatherings as they can accommodate up to 50 pax.

It was my first time to attend Zomato’s foodie meet-up and I liked how they do it. Before the much awaited food tasting, we were given the chance to get to know our fellow foodies. Everyone has to do a short introduction about their selves and that made us comfortable. Wouldn’t it be nice to dine with people whom you know?

To start of, we were served with five appetizers.
I personally love their buffalo wings which was perfectly cooked. I didn’t have to dip it because it was already good on its own.

Buffalo Wings, Php 180

Among all the chops that were served to us, my top pick is Grilled Tomahawk Chops with Dirty Rice and Mac and cheese. They have a hefty serving which be shared by two. I hate how their dirty rice can ruin one’s diet. It was extremely good!

Grilled Tomahawk chops, Php295 ( Go Dirty Rice option plus Php25)

Their Grilled hanger steak with wine sauce was the star of the night. This is not yet included on their menu but every foodie who attended the meet-up approved that this should be served at Tomahawk ASAP.
I am a sucker for medium rare steak so, this is definitely what I am going to order on my next visit. I think I can eat their steak on a daily basis. Haha! I was so happy when we had another round of Hanger Steak.

Hanger Steak, price not yet available

Well, aside from the Grilled Tomahawk chops, I bet my husband will love their Grilled Rosemary Chicken with Dirty rice and Mashed potatoes. Rosemary blended well with their chicken.

Grilled Rosemary Chicken, Php215 (Go Dirty rice option, plus Php25)

Also a must-try is Tomahawk’s Sausage and Sauerkraut with a big serving of fries. I am not really a fan of sausages but their sausage is just too good to resist.

Sausage and Sauerkraut,Php215

Match any of their dishes with Peach Iced Tea Carafes or any of their imported beers for a more delightful experience.

There were a lot of dishes that were served to us, but the dishes that I have mentioned are the ones that I highly recommend. Visit this resto soon to know how to enjoy food #TheTomahawkWay!

Our thoughts on Zomato’s write for a bite contest and Mesclun Bistro

We are both food lovers and because we wanted to share our experience with a larger audience, we started writing reviews at Zomato.com. It was never our intention to join their write for a bite contest but on their website it says that when you write a review with 50 words or more, you automatically earn an entry to their contest.

To our surprise, we received an email from Zomato.com telling us that our Momo Cafe review has been picked as the best review for January 11 and that they’ll be sending us meal vouchers.

The email address seems legit so we replied with our mailing address. It was after a week that we decided to ask Sarah if they have already sent the meal vouchers because we are used to receiving packages or gift certificates from different people within 24-48 hours. We are worried that someone might have received it for us.

There had been several follow up emails but some were never answered.
We were told though that the gift certificate was sent to us after we replied with our mailing address. That bothered us more. Of course, we don’t want to seem ungrateful and not post about the gift certificate that we received.

It was February 12 when we finally received the gift certificate which was sent via snail mail. Yes, Sarah was correct, they sent it on January 16, 2014. A Php1,000 worth of Mesclun Bistro gift certificate was sent to us with an issued date of August 15, 2013 and is valid for 6 months. So that means, we only have until today (February 15, 2014) to use it.
We never go on dinner dates every valentine’s day…it’s just not our thing. But since we only have few days left to use Mesclun Bistro’s GC, we called their office to reserve a table for February 14.
The first person who answered the phone passed it to another person, a guy who seem very polite. He told us that we can use the gift certificate for ala carte orders but not for their set menu for Valentine’s day. So, we agreed to avail their ala carte dishes. He reserved a table for two for us and even suggested that we pick the first seating which is 6:30 – 8:30 PM.

The following day, we received an SMS from Mesclun Bistro reminding us of our reservation. We arrived a little late because of the heavy traffic and we are unfamiliar with the bistro’s location so we did a little walking til we reached the location.

We were welcomed by their staff and lead us to our seats. A set menu was handed to us. There were two options for a different set. You can go for Php 1200 or Php1500 per head. We asked for another menu so we could order something else. The store manager went to our table and asked if we have a problem. So, we told him about our predicament. Okay, Php 1200 per head for Valentine’s day is not that pricey but we’re not willing to pay that much for a bistro that we haven’t tried yet.
We told the manager that the Gift certificate was sent to us by Zomato.com and we wanted to use it since it will expire today. He said that he’ll try to “extend” the gift certificate’s validity until today. Yes! That’s very confusing. Haha!
We were also told that he will try to find out who booked the table for us. A very lousy move that will not make the situation better. We waited for an answer for five minutes but we could no longer take the humiliation that this gift certificate has caused us. Note that our table was just a spit away from another couple who seem to have overheard us.

So, we just decided to call it a night.
It was a total waste of time and gas money driving from Antipolo to Serendra. We should have stayed home, cooked a decent meal, and did a movie marathon like we always do every valentine’s day.
